Chess.com is a large gaming platform providing tools and content for playing and learning chess to a global community of over 200 million users.

• Design and architect database systems optimized for real-time gaming, puzzle systems, and social graph traversal;
• Build internal tooling and automation to improve database deployment, migration, and operational efficiency;
• Develop data pipelines and ETL processes for analytics, machine learning features, and cross-system data synchronization;
• Engineer multi-regional database architectures to handle massive volumes of data with minimal latency;
• Solve complex data modeling challenges including chess game storage optimization and social graph representation;
• Drive database platform evolution by evaluating and implementing new technologies and architectural patterns;
• Build observability and performance tooling to monitor database behavior, query patterns, and capacity trends;
• Collaborate with product engineering teams to design optimal schemas, access patterns, and data layer integrations;
• Implement infrastructure-as-code practices for database provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management;
• Participate in on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 database availability and contribute to incident post-mortems.

• 5+ Years of professional database engineering experience with large-scale, high-availability systems in production;
• Expert-level proficiency with MySQL (Percona) including internals, replication topologies, and performance optimization;
• Strong software engineering skills with proficiency in Python and/or Go;
• Experience designing and building data pipelines using streaming or batch processing frameworks;
• Strong experience with Redis for caching architectures, pub/sub systems, and high-performance data structures;
• Advanced Linux systems knowledge including kernel behavior, I/O patterns, and hardware optimization;
• Experience with distributed systems concepts including CAP theorem, consensus protocols, and partition tolerance;
• Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or Pulumi;
• Experience with monitoring and observability platforms like Datadog, Prometheus, or PMM;
• Strong understanding of query optimization, execution plans, and index design;
• Nice to have: Gaming industry experience, deep MySQL internals knowledge, experience with database proxies (ProxySQL, Vitess), MySQL replication expertise, cloud database architecture experience (AWS, GCP), experience with ScyllaDB or Cassandra, knowledge of sharding and partitioning, experience with zero-downtime migration tooling, container and Kubernetes experience, MySQL backup and recovery expertise, track record of successful project delivery, open source contributions.
