Data scientist in AI

You work within the AI Development team on ChatAmsterdam: an AI chatbot from the municipality that helps civil servants improve their work efficiency and quality as a thinking partner, in a secure environment that protects their privacy. You work on AI solutions for the whole city. You further develop ChatAmsterdam and help expand the municipality’s AI landscape. You develop smart, scalable software in Python, explore the latest AI developments and translate them into new features for AI solutions. Together with the AI Development team, you work in a supportive, technical team of 9 colleagues.

• Design and build generic and scalable data and AI solutions, such as adding data sources to ChatAmsterdam and developing new features for end users, such as a document hub.
• Together with the team, make decisions about the design of data and AI solutions, with special attention to modelling RAG systems. Coordinate developments with, among others, the AI platform team and the Data Platform team.
• Actively contribute to an inclusive, safe and sustainable approach to data and AI development, with reliability and transparency at its core.

• At least 3 years of relevant development experience as a Software Engineer, AI Engineer or Data Scientist, with demonstrable experience developing and putting applications with AI functionality into production.
• Demonstrable experience with Python, software design, backend development and APIs, writing maintainable, modular code and applying best practices such as Git, automated tests and code reviews.
• Demonstrable experience developing, evaluating and putting LLM applications and agents into production, with practical experience using LangChain, LangGraph and Langfuse.
• Experience with cloud deployment and production management, including Kubernetes, Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, logging, monitoring and troubleshooting.
• The above must be clearly demonstrated in your CV and/or motivation letter.

• You will join us for at least 32 and no more than 36 hours per week.
• A gross monthly salary of €4,520 to €6,422 (salary scale 11), based on a 36-hour working week. The exact salary will depend on the education, knowledge and experience you bring.
• A fixed-term employment contract for 12 months. An extension is possible. A permanent contract may follow after 2 years.
• If you already have a permanent employment contract with the Municipality of Amsterdam, you will retain it and be seconded under a temporary deployment agreement.
• Development and training opportunities. Our internal training centre, the Amsterdam School, offers various courses, development programmes and guidance at work to help you keep challenging yourself.
• An individual choice budget (IKB) of 17.05% of your salary, which you can use, for example, for additional pension contributions or extra leave days.
• A pension scheme through ABP, the pension fund for government and education. We pay 70% of your pension contribution.
• Travel reimbursement of €0.10 per kilometre for car travel, €0.15 per kilometre for cycling and €0.21 per kilometre for public transport. This applies to a one-way commuting distance of up to 45 kilometres and to the number of days you work in the office.
• For days working from home, you receive a net working-from-home allowance of €3.25 for each day you work from home.
• A monthly contribution towards health insurance.
• Hybrid working: partly from home, partly in the office, with good equipment for working both at home and in the office.
• A mobile phone and/or laptop.
