platform engineer

Springer Nature provides information services and develops unified engineering platforms that support product teams, hundreds of developers globally, and hundreds of millions of euros in revenue. Its platforms provide standardised capabilities for observability, continuous integration, security, storage, databases, and runtime infrastructure.

• Contribute to delivery and participation responsibilities as an engineering team member working on the Engineering Platform;
• Build, operate, and maintain core capabilities and components of the Engineering Platform;
• Treat the Platform and its components as a product with real customers;
• Build and design automation, tooling, and self-service mechanisms for product teams;
• Own and operate platform services end to end, including Kubernetes clusters, automation and tooling, CI/CD, and observability systems;
• Provide technical support and consultancy to product teams and feed customer insights into the product roadmap;
• Take an active role in the team;
• Understand the business value delivered by the team;
• Develop an understanding of customers and their needs;
• Develop an understanding of the Engineering Platform and key strategies;
• Learn about the software development lifecycle at Springer Nature;
• Learn the key technologies and tools used by the team;
• Participate in team ceremonies and day-to-day work;
• Create a development plan with the line manager;
• Contribute to platform improvements;
• Select appropriate technology solutions for specific problems;
• Understand the team’s working context;
• Understand and discuss business requirements with stakeholders and product owners;
• Learn about security, compliance, and accessibility risks and their mitigation;
• Manage container-based runtime platforms;
• Participate in architectural discussions;
• Understand company goals and the department’s contribution to them;
• Lead major initiatives;
• Improve system performance and reliability;
• Take active steps to mitigate risks in shipped products;
• Shape the evolution of the Engineering Platform;
• Support and enable delivery through good practices;
• Participate in user research when applicable;
• Provide useful and actionable feedback to team members and foster a feedback culture;
• Help grow the internal culture through technical share-backs, 10% time, and similar events.

• Experience operating, automating, and maintaining cloud infrastructure in AWS or GCP, including contributing to system architecture and design;
• Expertise in at least one of storage, routing, cloud networking, organisation policy definition and automation, or IAM;
• Programming experience with Golang, Python, JVM-based languages, or similar modern languages;
• Experience with general automation patterns and version control;
• Experience managing Kubernetes deployments and writing Kubernetes operators or controllers;
• Experience taking projects from design to production;
• Experience working in multidisciplinary teams focused on shared outcomes across the software delivery lifecycle;
• Nice to have: Kubernetes API integrations such as operators, controllers, or add-ons; Go application development and idiomatic Go practices; Kubernetes, Kubevela, GKE, EKS, Grafana LGTM stack, Sentry, Open Telemetry, Concourse, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Ansible, Postgres, or Mongo; API development and exposing programmable components for humans and machines.
