• Design and operate highly available PostgreSQL across zones and regions, with automated, tested failover and protection against split-brain
• Define database infrastructure as code, including clusters, parameters, networking, access, monitoring, and backups; ensure peer review, CI/CD deployment, and drift detection
• Build self-service database provisioning for product teams
• Plan and execute migrations, upgrades, and table moves with zero or near-zero downtime, including cross-version, cross-cluster, and cross-cloud work
• Partner with developers on schema changes, queries, connection pooling, transaction scope, retries, and expand-and-contract migrations
• Define SLOs and build SLO-based alerts and dashboards to detect latency and capacity problems
• Design backup and recovery processes and validate them through scheduled restore and failover tests measuring RTO and RPO and producing audit evidence
• Optimize instance and storage sizing and select cost-effective options that meet requirements
• Secure data through least-privilege access, secrets management, encryption at rest and in transit, audited access, and PII masking
• Lead and participate in incident response and on-call; write blameless post-mortems and ensure follow-up actions are completed
• Replace manual runbooks with automation and document remaining procedures

• Deep production experience with PostgreSQL, including operating it at scale and handling MVCC, vacuum and bloat, locking, physical and logical replication, and query planning based on real incidents
• Use infrastructure as code as the standard way of working; keep work in version control and review it before application
• Use CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure, database, and schema changes reaching production. Candidates whose normal process relies on console clicks, SSH changes, or wiki steps are not a fit
• At least 5 years running production databases as a DBRE, SRE, platform, or database engineer, ideally with substantial AWS RDS or Aurora experience
• Experience designing high availability and disaster recovery, including replication, automated failover, multi-region or multi-cloud redundancy, and RTO, RPO, and cost trade-offs
• Track record of zero-downtime changes, including online migrations, major version upgrades, or moving data between clusters
• Understand application database usage, including connection pools, ORMs such as Hibernate, transaction scope, retries, idempotency, and safe deployment order
• Define observability measures, alert on SLOs, and verify changes with data
• Script in Python, Bash, or Go to automate operational work
• Comfortable working in a regulated financial services environment with strict access control, encryption, and audit trail requirements
• Communicate clearly, take ownership of outcomes, and partner with developers rather than gatekeeping
