Java Engineer

Our client is an established FinTech software provider with more than 25 years of experience, developing banking technology for regulated financial institutions across international markets.

As a Senior Java Engineer, you will design, develop, and support backend services used across banking and payment systems. You will take ownership of solutions from technical analysis and design through implementation, deployment, and production support. The role combines hands-on development with close collaboration across Product, QA, DevOps, Architecture, Compliance, and other engineering teams.

The position is suitable both for an experienced Senior Engineer who wants to remain strongly hands-on and for someone with broader system design or architecture experience who wants to contribute beyond individual development tasks.

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot;
• Take end-to-end ownership of features from technical analysis and solution design through production release and ongoing support;
• Build secure, scalable, and maintainable REST APIs and backend integrations for banking and payment systems;
• Develop services within microservice, distributed, messaging, and event-driven architectures.
• Integrate internal and external systems through APIs, messaging technologies, queues, files, and database-driven workflows;
• Work with PostgreSQL and other relational databases, including data modelling, query optimisation, transactions, locking, and performance;
• Develop clean and testable code supported by unit, integration, and API testing;
• Participate in technical design and architecture discussions and propose practical, maintainable solutions;
• Investigate production issues through debugging, log analysis, data validation, and observability tools;
• Improve existing systems through refactoring, stronger abstractions, documentation, and improved observability.
• Work with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-ready environments;
• Develop systems with security, data protection, auditability, regulatory requirements, and operational resilience in mind.

• Strong professional experience in Java backend development, ideally at Senior Engineer level;
• Advanced hands-on knowledge of Java and Spring Boot;
• Strong understanding of the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Web, Spring Data, Spring Security, transactions, configuration, validation, and testing;
• Experience designing and maintaining REST APIs and backend integrations;
• Good understanding of microservices, distributed systems, messaging, and production-grade backend development;
• Strong SQL and relational database knowledge;
• Practical experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or comparable messaging technologies.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines;
• Experience with automated testing tools such as JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers, MockMvc, or similar;
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and analytical problem-solving skills;
• Ability to work independently, clarify requirements, identify risks, and explain technical trade-offs.
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Previous experience in FinTech, banking, payments, e-money, compliance, or another regulated financial environment;
• Experience contributing to system architecture, technical design, or broader engineering decisions;
• Knowledge of AWS services such as EKS, MSK, S3, RDS, Redis, or comparable cloud technologies;
• Experience with Keycloak, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, authentication, authorisation, or MFA;
• Familiarity with audit logs, CDC, Debezium, Kafka Streams, reporting systems, or data warehouse integrations;
• Experience with Grafana, Prometheus, CloudWatch, OpenSearch, distributed tracing, or similar observability tooling;
• Understanding of DORA, GDPR, information security, and operational resilience;
• Opensearch / Elasticsearch experience;
• Experience mentoring engineers or helping improve engineering practices across a team.
