data engineer for drug development

AstraZeneca is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing, and commercialising prescription medicines for serious diseases. Its R&D IT supports drug research, development, product and portfolio strategy, medical affairs, and corporate functions. The Data & Analytics team provides analytics, data, and insight services supporting R&D Science IT and the company’s Data and AI/ML strategy, including efforts to transform antibody discovery.

• Design, build, enhance, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines for efficient data ingestion and processing;
• Design, develop, and maintain REST APIs for system integration;
• Support data, design, product, and executive stakeholders with technical data questions;
• Maintain the AWS base infrastructure;
• Tune SQL queries and ETL pipelines for performance;
• Identify opportunities for efficiency and automation;
• Investigate data issues, analyse end-to-end pipelines, and partner with users to resolve them;
• Stay current with recent technology developments and industry practices;
• Maintain and refine a front-end application;
• Contribute to solution development and testing;
• Share responsibility for delivery;
• Set expectations, share progress, and build relationships with stakeholders;
• Provide technical guidance throughout the software development lifecycle;
• Identify opportunities to reduce operating costs in existing production services.

• Solid development skills with practical knowledge of Python, Git, and versioning;
• Experience with big data, ETL, and cloud tools and techniques;
• Good hands-on experience with AWS;
• DevOps-first approach with extensive experience using GitHub and GitHub Actions or similar tools;
• SQL experience; PostgreSQL is preferred;
• Experience triaging and resolving tickets;
• Experience working in globally distributed teams;
• Ability to design and document development best practices;
• Good experience with API design, documentation, and REST;
• Solid analytical and data manipulation skills;
• Experience providing technical guidance within data and analytics teams;
• Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to delivery;
• Ability to partner with business colleagues and build trusted relationships;
• Some front-end development and JavaScript/TypeScript experience, with a stronger focus on data and backend work;
• Nice to have: familiarity with Agile practices and Jira, experience with visualisation technologies such as Power BI, understanding of AI code-generation opportunities, capabilities, and limitations, experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code, experience with Iceberg, Glue, and/or Hive.

• Hybrid schedule: 3 days at the office and 2 days at home in Barcelona.
