backend developer for payment infrastructure

Renno is a payment rail for renovation. It enables homeowners to fund projects and pay as work is approved, while builders receive payments without chasing and both sides can track where the money is.

• Own the product backend, including application APIs, workflows, data models and access controls;
• Own the product side of payment integration by issuing commands, consuming events and keeping product, notification and analytics state consistent with the payments service;
• Shape API and event contracts with payments engineers, including versioning, idempotency, ordering and recovery behaviour;
• Establish engineering standards through code review, automated checks, database tests and safe release practices;
• Make architectural decisions explicit through concise decision records, operational documentation and shared ownership;
• Ship backend changes and test product journeys when integrations fail;
• Own changes spanning the product and a service from contract and data model through release and production behaviour;
• Help other engineers make sound technical decisions through design discussions, review and pairing;
• Make changes across services safer to deliver and easier to diagnose.

• Experience owning correctness in production systems where operations have financial or other irreversible consequences;
• Ability to explain a concurrency problem and the design change that resolved it;
• Experience designing and evolving APIs and event-driven service integrations, including retries, duplicate events and recovery from partial failure;
• Deep PostgreSQL expertise, including schema design, transactional behaviour, authorisation models, safe migrations and database testing;
• Production experience shipping and maintaining TypeScript;
• Experience taking ownership of an existing production system and making it easier to understand, operate and extend;
• Experience being the engineer others turn to for difficult technical decisions, explaining alternatives, documenting reasoning and helping others implement decisions;
• English is the working language;
• Not primarily seeking infrastructure, cloud operations or deployment tooling work;
• Not seeking a management role with occasional coding;
• Nice to have: Payment or banking integrations, ledgers, identity verification, regulated systems, security or data-residency due diligence, Dutch.
