backend developer for language learning

Babbel Labs is an independent, AI-first company within the Babbel group that brings AI, research, and product together to create language-learning experiences. It is rebuilding how learning content is created, stored, and served, and how learners are guided to their next learning experience.

• Build and evolve services across the learning platform, owning each service from its API contract through to production
• Take on services written by other engineers, working alongside their original developers
• Design durable API and data contracts, with type-safe transforms between the API, domain, and persistence layers
• Operate built services, instrument them, understand their failure modes, change live data safely, and investigate incidents
• Deliver with coding agents and verify their output before relying on it

• Strong, hands-on backend engineering experience with TypeScript and Node as the primary working language, focused on backend services rather than build tooling or a front-end framework’s server
• Deep, practical AWS experience in a serverless-first setting, including designing with Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and event streaming
• Ability to design API and data contracts and model a domain, including type-safe transforms between the API, domain, and persistence layers
• Production ownership experience, including instrumenting services, understanding failure modes, safely changing live data, and handling incidents on owned systems
• Daily use of coding agents, with their output checked before relying on it
• Ability to work independently in unfamiliar codebases and understand their existing patterns before making changes
• Working familiarity with Terraform and CI/CD pipelines, sufficient to ship and change a service’s delivery
