The company operates a dating app with over 17 million users worldwide, helping people connect on their own terms. It aims to make dating more transparent, fun, and less awkward.

• Own and drive the company’s backend technical vision, architecture, and long-term scalability plans
• Manage four senior backend engineers and oversee one to two DevOps engineers, including one-to-ones, hiring, firing, performance, and growth
• Take ownership of the full technical team, approximately 15 members, over time
• Translate product goals into technical roadmaps, sprint plans, and engineering priorities
• Make architectural decisions on performance, infrastructure, reliability, and scaling for millions of users
• Establish and improve engineering processes, code quality standards, and deployment pipelines
• Own technical challenges involving performance bottlenecks, data flow, caching strategies, and infrastructure decisions
• Drive the adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices across the team, including code generation, review, testing, and tooling
• Review code and contribute hands-on
• Run and support A/B testing and experimentation infrastructure for approximately five experiments per week
• Ensure API speed, uptime, data accuracy, and architectural consistency
• Design backend systems for scale, resilience, and fast iteration
• Implement security and privacy best practices

• 8+ Years of backend development experience in production environments
• Proven experience leading engineering teams, with responsibility for hiring, firing, performance reviews, and team structure
• Experience at Director of Engineering, Head of Engineering, or CTO level, or equivalent ownership of people and systems
• Recent experience building or running engineering at a startup with fewer than 50 people
• Experience owning backend architecture for a mobile-first, consumer-facing app
• Continued interest in hands-on coding; not looking to become a full-time manager
• Strong communication skills to explain tradeoffs, align stakeholders, and lead engineering discussions across a distributed team
• Proven experience scaling backend systems to high traffic, with 10k+ DAUs and ideally much higher
• Experience driving technical planning, sprints, and feature delivery
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, databases, caching, and performance optimization
• Decisive approach and ability to make decisions quickly
• Not a fit for enterprise or big-company veterans who managed 50+ people and have not touched code in years, process-heavy operators who prioritize Jira workflows before shipping, or people who need to be told what to build
• Communicate clearly and confidently in English
