Job Title: Embedded Software Engineering Specialist

The Caterpillar Technology team in the UK, has some of the most exciting engineering roles within the Caterpillar global organisation, working on the integration of electronic control systems within multiple Caterpillar products. Integration of the latest Electronics and Electrical technology helps differentiate Caterpillar products from its competitors, by enabling exceptional performance and value to the customer. Our integrated machine systems control all aspects of construction machine operation (engine/transmission or full electric powertrain, hydraulic systems), provide the human-machine interface (operator controls and information displays), and constantly monitor and communicate position, operation, diagnostic and prognostic information to enable machine automation, improved productivity and enhanced serviceability.

As an Embedded Software Engineering Specialist, you will develop, design, implement and test software of embedded devices and systems. The specialist works closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, high-quality software-based solutions. Key responsibilities include:

• Develop and support software architectures for machine and technology applications.
• Testing and debugging embedded system software using different tools/methods available to improve code quality and optimise system performance.
• Writing and implementing source codes of embedded systems and enhancing code samples of existing systems.
• Collaboration with systems, controls, and product teams to define and implement software strategies.
• Contribute technical expertise to project planning, design reviews, and product development activities.
• Maintain effective collaboration across engineering disciplines and global teams.
• Maintain/manage tools and processes to support embedded software and Autosar development.
• Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
• Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviours.
• Teamwork: Knowledge of the necessity and value of teamwork; experience with; ability to work cooperatively towards shared goals and being supportive of others at all levels.
• Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
• Producing Results: Understanding of the criticality of getting things done in spite of current circumstances and the ability to utilise assigned resources and leverage back-channel resources (individuals or teams) to achieve or exceed planned outcomes.
• Software Product Design/Architecture: Knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into the software product design.
• Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyse and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
• Technical Troubleshooting: Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation.

Top Candidates may have:

• Prior experience in embedded software development gained in vehicle or construction equipment control or an associated environment
• Variant/calibration data management experience
• An understanding of fixed-point data typing
• Extensive MATLAB Simulink software development experience
• Knowledge of / prior experience of AUTOSAR
• Knowledge of Data Links (CAN/Ethernet) and Calibration/Diagnostic tools (i.e. CANape, CANalyser/CANoe).

• This role is based in the office 5 days per week
• <10% travel
