Design, Java - Alternative Payment Methods

Make your mark at one of the biggest names in payments. We're looking for a hands on Design Lead to join our ever-evolving Alternative Payment Methods delivery team and help us unleash the potential of every business.

This role combines active software development with pragmatic technical leadership, taking end-to-end ownership of designing, building and delivering reliable integrations with Alternative Payment Method (APM) providers and payment partners.

Is this you?

You should have a strong understanding of payment transaction lifecycles, provider APIs, asynchronous callbacks, payment state management, idempotency, retries, reconciliation, and failure recovery. General financial services experience without direct payment integration experience is not sufficient for this role.

We are actively adopting AI-first engineering practices and exploring emerging agentic development approaches. We are looking for someone who already uses AI-assisted development tools in their daily engineering workflow, actively experiments with new capabilities, and can help the team adopt them responsibly. You should be comfortable using AI to accelerate coding, testing, debugging, design exploration, and documentation, while maintaining strong engineering standards, security, and human oversight.

This is not an enterprise or solution architect role. It is a team embedded, hands on design leadership role for someone who enjoys solving real delivery problems, improving engineering effectiveness, and helping teams implement clear, pragmatic designs.

Own team level design

• Lead the design of services and integration flows that support new payment products and provider onboarding.
• Define clear, minimal, and stable service and integration boundaries to enable rapid onboarding of new APMs and payment partners.
• Remain actively involved in Java and Spring Boot development, personally implementing complex features, provider integrations, and production fixes while guiding engineers through design decisions, code reviews, and troubleshooting.

Enable rapid payment provider integrations

• Create reusable integration templates, standards, and accelerators for onboarding payment providers, including authentication, routing, mapping, validation, error handling, retries, and callback or webhook processing.
• Design resilient flows with idempotency, timeout handling, retries, duplicate event protection, and callback recovery to support operationally reliable payment processing.
• Apply strong payments domain understanding to integration design, including transaction lifecycles, asynchronous payment events, provider specific behaviors, merchant journeys, and operational edge cases.
• Drive designs that reduce time to onboard new payment providers and improve repeatability across multiple provider integrations.

Accelerate delivery and continuous improvement

• Remove bottlenecks in delivery and improve engineering flow through better design patterns, reusable components, and clearer team practices.
• Measure and improve lead time for change, deployment frequency, and change failure rate.
• Champion AI first engineering practices within the team, using AI tools pragmatically to accelerate design, implementation, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting.
• Explore and adopt emerging agentic development approaches where they add value, while maintaining strong guardrails around quality, security, explainability, and production readiness.

Build quality and automation in

• Establish a pragmatic test strategy spanning unit, mutation, integration, contract, acceptance, and performance testing.
• Drive CI or CD excellence through quality gates, automated checks, and immutable stage to production image promotion.
• Use tools such as GitHub, Dependabot, and GitHub Copilot to accelerate safe change and reduce manual toil.
• Help the team use AI assisted development responsibly, ensuring generated designs, code, and tests meet Worldpay engineering standards and are supported by strong validation and review practices.

Operability by design

• Instrument services with OpenTelemetry and deliver actionable Splunk dashboards and xMatters alerts aligned to SLIs and SLOs.
• Optimize deployments using readiness and liveness checks, autoscaling, resource controls, rollout strategies, and fast rollback paths.
• Design systems for operational transparency, resilience, and rapid incident response.
• Ensure designs reflect the reliability expectations of payment systems, including traceability, auditability, failure recovery, and support for high confidence production operations.

Cross functional leadership

• Lead design and code reviews, mentor engineers on design thinking, clean code, and refactoring, and support knowledge sharing across locations.
• Work closely with product and partner facing stakeholders to balance business urgency with safe, scalable provider onboarding.

• 8 to 12 years of software engineering experience, with 2 to 4 years in a team lead, tech lead, or design lead capacity.
• Strong, current hands-on Java and Spring Boot expertise, with proven experience leading technical delivery while actively contributing production code.
• Demonstrated experience personally implementing payment provider, PSP, gateway, or APM integrations in production, including asynchronous flows, retries, idempotency, and failure recovery.
• Practical experience with AI-assisted software development tools and a proactive mindset toward experimenting with emerging agentic engineering workflows.
• Hands on CI/CD, DevOps, and containerization experience, including Kubernetes and OpenShift, plus a solid understanding of secure coding and OWASP practices.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with experience working in cross functional Agile teams.
• A mindset focused on accelerating delivery, simplifying engineering design, and enabling continuous improvement.
• Experience using AI assisted software engineering tools in day to day delivery is strongly preferred. Familiarity with emerging AI first or agentic development practices is a plus.
• Track record as a hands on technical leader who improves team execution and delivery outcomes.
