Backend engineer for AI workflow automation

A Barcelona-based technology scale-up with around 100 employees and an international team of more than 10 nationalities. It is a SaaS data intelligence company for e-commerce, helping major multinational consumer goods brands make better decisions in their online channels using data and its own AI. It has several products in production, each with its own team, and is growing with funding. They want to strengthen the product team with someone to lead backend across its products and build a unified engineering function: frameworks, standards, processes, and ways of working. This person will also own an internal AI-based workflow automation platform for clients.

• Lead backend development across several products and own the technical roadmap
• Decide on and evolve the technology stack, including decisions such as rebuilding or patching
• Manage a backend engineer from day one, with the possibility of the team growing
• Bring AI and automation into the product
• Work directly with product stakeholders and the CEO, translating business needs into a technical roadmap
• Remain hands-on: this is a building role, not just a supervisory one

• More than 5 years of hands-on backend experience, ideally across several products
• Experience making and defending stack decisions
• Experience setting up engineering processes and team structure from scratch
• Genuine interest in applying AI and automation to the product
• Fluent English and Spanish
• The stack is open to evolution, so you do not need to master everything, although you should have a good command of Kotlin or Python

• Permanent employment contract
• Gross annual salary of €50,000 to €60,000, depending on experience
• Hybrid model: 3 days in the office (Barcelona's upper area) and 2 days remotely (Tuesday and Wednesday)
