backend developer for cloud infrastructure

Nexcess provides specialty cloud solutions for organizations that need to combine performance and compliance. It serves businesses worldwide, from agencies scaling client sites to enterprises running mission-critical operations. Compute Solutions builds and operates VPS, Cloud Dedicated, storage, and bare metal products that customers use to run their cloud infrastructure.

• Own backend features end to end within the Compute Solutions domain
• Take work from specification through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing production support across VPS, Cloud Dedicated, storage, and bare metal products
• Design and develop reliable backend services and integrations
• Build and maintain application logic, APIs, data flows, and supporting services for Compute Solutions products
• Work with relational databases and data models, designing, querying, and maintaining database-backed functionality with a focus on correctness, performance, and reliability
• Translate requirements into clear technical specifications, identify unknowns, dependencies, and failure scenarios early, and resolve ambiguity before implementation
• Use AI-assisted engineering tools and agentic tooling daily for implementation and review, critically validating generated code and taking accountability for the final result
• Verify changes with evidence, write tests for every change, validate failure scenarios and happy paths, and provide evidence that changes are production-ready
• Review other engineers’ code and technical changes, identifying design, maintainability, security, and reliability risks and providing actionable feedback
• Work safely in existing and unfamiliar codebases, make incremental improvements without unnecessary rewrites, and leave code better tested and documented
• Participate in the on-call rotation, respond to incidents, contribute to root-cause analysis, and ensure follow-up actions are completed
• Mentor other engineers, share technical knowledge, explain design decisions, and support less experienced engineers through implementation and review
• Identify cross-team dependencies early and work directly with relevant engineers to avoid delivery blockers
• Understand customer and business value, ask questions before building the wrong solution, and deliver committed work predictably to agreed dates and quality standards
• Declare risks and timelines in writing and raise schedule risks early with evidence

• 5+ Years of experience in backend software engineering and production systems
• 5+ Years of experience with Perl
• 5+ Years of experience with PostgreSQL or a similar relational database
• Strong understanding of backend architecture, application logic, APIs, and data-driven systems
• Experience building, testing, deploying, and supporting production software
• Strong SQL skills and experience with relational data models
• Experience writing automated tests and validating production changes before deployment
• Ability to read unfamiliar code and troubleshoot issues across multiple parts of a production system
• Experience participating in an on-call rotation and responding to production incidents
• Hands-on experience using AI-assisted engineering tools in day-to-day development
• Clear written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a remote, distributed team across multiple time zones

• Excellent pay; the pay range is 4,000 - 5,000 EUR per month (SDC Slovakia) or 5,000 - 6,000 EUR per month (SDC Cyprus)
